SMP Awards Scholarships to Eight Former Players

June 9th, 2010 by SMP

Shades Mountain Community Park (SMP) recently presented scholarships to eight Hoover High School graduates.

The award is a $625 scholarship for former SMP players who have demonstrated outstanding character and academic and athletic success. Eligible students must have completed their final year of study at a local high school and must have played baseball at the park. Selection criteria include academic performance, letters of recommendation, an essay and interviews with members of the review committee.

The recipients are:
•    Matthew Bryant
•    Dillon Daugherty
•    Lewis Hammond
•    Brock Hardy
•    Thomas Sanford
•    Ryan Patrick Shannon
•    Charlie Stocks
•    Judd Williams III

“These scholarships are something we are blessed to be able to provide,” said SMP Board President Brian Hammonds. “We base these scholarships on tournaments we are able to host. Our Board and community volunteers work extremely hard to steward our resources, and I can think of no better way to recognize these terrific kids than for our park to help pay for their future education.

“These kids literately grew up at our park. All are deserving of this award as they begin their college careers.”

Shades Mountain Park is a non-profit organization that provides baseball programs for children in central and western Hoover. There are leagues for each age group beginning at age 4. Park facilities – nine fields on 14 acres plus playgrounds, picnic grounds and practice and hitting areas – are maintained and owned by the City of Hoover. The Park is also known as Hoover Sports Park West.

Founded as the Bluff Park Little League in 1958, Shades Mountain Community Park has provided development for thousands of children proceeding to be productive citizens and valuable members of the community. For more information about SMP visit www.shadesmountainpark.org.

SMP’s 9 YO American Black All Stars Knocking Cancer Out of the Park

June 9th, 2010 by SMP
Respond

The SMP Black All Stars are working extremely hard on All Star baseball daily.  In addition, they are also working hard on “Knock Cancer out of the BallPark” program.

“Knock Cancer out of the Ball Park” is for awareness and the Black team (in conjunction with Children’s Hospital) is working to collect sunscreen and chapstick for all cancer patients at Children’s Hospital.

The team is trying to raise awareness and its goal is to fill the back of a pick up truck full of sunscreen and chapstick for the patients. Ben and Valerie Padd have been instrumental in “Knocking Cancer out of the Ball Park” program.  Valerie contacted Children’s Hospital and a representative came out to the park and spoke to the team.  The boys are 100% behind the program. Home Depot donated the orange buckets for them to collect the sunscreen and chapstick.

The Children’s Hospital of Alabama is the 10th busiest pediatric medical center in the United States. Children’s Hospital is Alabama’s single largest provider of specialized pediatric services for all forms of cancer, leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumors, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders and sickle cell diseases. It also is home to the Lowder stem cell transplant program and the only pediatric bone marrow transplant program in the state. It is closely affiliated with the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) but it is not part of UAB.

The SMP Black All Star has received some nice feedback from the Children’s Hospital facebook page as well.
