And finally, here are a few news and notes to help you know what to expect in the coming days and weeks:

  • There are 756 children registered so far in our eight leagues and interest continues, even though deadline has passed. We had 753 children last year and 748 in 2008. T-ball has a record 143 kids enrolled, followed by 109 in 9/10 YO American, 103 in 11/12 YO, 89 in 7 YO, 84 in 8 YO, 81 in 6 YO, 73 in 9/10 YO National and 70 in 13/14 YO.
  • Guests no doubt will notice several enhancements and improvements at SMP. A wireless network was recently installed and is up and running and will be a treat for members. The ID is “smp” and the password is “playball“. We hope this is popular and helpful to our families and visitors. Other improvements include newly-painted curbs, improvements to the lighting, landscaping improvements, signage improvements, new shades structures and, of course, the best fields in metro Birmingham.
  • Fund-raising plans are underway for the proposed hitting facility and will be announced at the upcoming Team Mom meeting. Contact John Parker for more information.
  • If you have used baseball equipment be on the alert for news about a donation program we have planned that will be announced soon from Kristi Tolbert, the Park Mom.
  • Coaches will be named later this week and player evaluations begin this coming weekend (see date and times above).
  • All coaches will also be going through specialized safety training later this month.
  • We will have a special “SMP Sale” at Dick’s Sporting Goods (Patton Creek location) on Saturday, Feb. 20th. That day from noon till 4 p.m., SMP members will receive 15 percent off your total purchase. Some vendor restrictions apply and discount applies to the retail price only. We will have a table set up near the front of the store with coupons. In turn, Dick’s will give each coach at SMP a kit complete with practice baseballs, a ball bucket, a score book and clipboard and a water bottle for each player. Please support this event, and thank you to Dick’s Sporting Goods for stepping aboard as our first park sponsor this season.
  • Look for news about the big Opening Day Ceremony planned for Saturday, March 27th at 11 a.m. All players and teams are invited to participate.

As always, if you have any questions you may contact the Board at info@shadesmountainpark.org.
