Happy New Year’s from Shades Mountain Park; SMP Welcomes New Board

While most folks are celebrating Independence Day this week, SMP is also celebrating New Year’s because today, July 1, is the first day of the park’s baseball year. A new Board of Directors officially takes office today.

The Board typically meets the first Monday of each month in the SMP Board Room at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to all SMP members but advance notice is required to attend due to the small size of the room. 8 YO Team Finishes as Runner Up in Alabama Sports Festival/USSSA State Tournament

Congratulations to the 8 YO SMP Bucs for finishing second in the recent Alabama Sports Festival/USSSA State Tournament held at West Homewood Park. The team lost in the finals to Mt. Brook National, 13-5. Team members were:

Fields to be Closed, Thursday, June 25th

All fields at SMP will be closed this Thursday for herbicide spraying. This spraying can be potentially harmful so please honor the signs and stay off the fields this day.

10 YO East Team Takes Metro American Title

The 10 YO Shades Mountain East team won the Metro American Championship Game against Mountain Brook Green last week. The team had beaten the top 3 seeded teams and won the championship, 10-8.

7 YO National Wins Metro Title

Congratulations to the 7 YO National for winning its Metro tournaments last night.

The SMP 7 YO Nationals defeated Trussville, 12-11. The team was undefeated in Pool Play and the Tournament. They needed two runs in the bottom of the 6th to pull out the win. The coaches took the boys to Krispy Kreme after the game in a limo. Players were:

June 17th Tournament Team Updates

The 8 YO National team finished 3rd in its tournament at West Homewood Park. The American White team finished 4th of 14 and the American Orange Team 5th in their tournament at Mt. Brook.

The 10 YO American East team advanced to the championship game of its tournament at SMP with a 17-10 win over 2-seeded Mt. Brook Green. Their championship is tonight at 5:30.

The 13/14 YO team defeated Oak Mountain Blue last night, 14-2, to advance to the final three. They play Hoover East White tonight at Vestavia’s Wald Park with the winner heading to the tournament finals. They beat Homewood Monday, 13-2.

Monday, June 15 Update

Here are the updates we received over the weekend:

The 7 YO American team defeated Oak Mountain Red, 25-13, on June 10 and Vestavia Blue, 26-4 on June 12.

The 8 YO National team is the #1 seed in its tournament and faces #2 seed Mountain Brook tonight at 7:30 in the winner’s bracket finals. The American Orange team faces Mountain Brook Green in the loser’s bracket of its tournament tonight at 5:30 and the American White team plays Oak Mountain Red at the same time. Both Orange and White lost Sunday. If the two win they will play one another at 7:30.

The 10 YO American East team won its first two games, including a win over #1 see Oak Mountain, 15-12.

10 YO East Tops West Wednesday; 8 YO Orange Team Wins in Opening Round

The 8 YO American Orange team won last night in the opening round of its tournament at Mt. Brook and the 10 YO American East team defeated the West team in extra innings of the opening round of their tournament last night at SMP.

Fields Reopened Today

We apologize for the poor communication yesterday regarding the herbicide/pesticide application that closed all fields at the park Tuesday. Fields are back online today. The Metro 10 YO National and American Tournaments begin tonight at SMP.
